Babe Didrickson Zaharias - a History Heroes Sports Hero

Babe Didrickson Zaharias

One of History Heroes’¬†Sports Heroes, Babe Didrickson Zaharias, was born today: 26th June 1911 in Texas, USA. She was born Mildred Didrickson but soon acquired her nickname ‘Babe’ after another one of our Sports Heroes, Babe Ruth, when she hit 5 home runs in a childhood baseball game.

Babe Didrickson Zaharias was a phenomenal all-rounder and excelled in several sports. She competed primarily in athletics, basketball and golf. She won medals in the 1932 Olympics for track and field events. She won the national basketball championships three years running. Then she turned her hand to golf and in the 1940s she became the greatest female golfer of all time. She won 17 successive golf tournaments in 1946-47 and won 82 tournaments in 20 years. We felt she earned her place in our game of Sports Heroes.
